Season Info
Masterworks 1 – Force of Nature
10/18/26
Lauded for his sumptuous tone and jaw-dropping technique, cellist Zuill Bailey opens the Bangor Symphony Orchestra’s 131st season performing Michael Daugherty’s Tales of Hemingway, for which he received the Best Solo Performance Grammy Award in 2017. We begin the program with Peggy Stuart Coolidge’s suite New England Autumn, inspired by life in New England and brought to life by rich orchestral imagery and resounding flair. Rounding out the program is the Second Symphony of the deeply emotionally disturbed composer Robert Schumann, written as part of a self-care journey toward calm and inner peace.
Program
New England Autumn | Peggy Stuart Coolidge
Tales of Hemingway | Michael Daugherty
Zuill Bailey, cello
Symphony No. 2 in C major | Robert Schumann
Masterworks 2 – Symphonic Metamorphosis
11/22/26
Inspiration for the younger generation—journey with us as we hear how Edward Elgar was inspired by J.S. Bach, and the pinnacle work of Paul Hindemith, inspired by von Weber. Beethoven’s Second Piano Concerto heavily borrows techniques used by W.A. Mozart, who passed away just four years before this work’s premiere, with drama and contrast in Beethoven’s maturing style plainly audible.
Program
Der Freischütz Overture | Carl Maria von Weber
Piano Concerto No. 2 | Ludwig van Beethoven
Henry Kramer, piano
Fantasia and Fugue in C minor | J.S. Bach/arr. Edward Elgar
Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by Carl Maria von Weber | Paul Hindemith
Nutcracker
12/19/26 & 12/20/26
A holiday tradition for all ages, the Bangor Symphony Orchestra proudly presents the annual production of The Nutcracker with the Robinson Ballet and Bangor Area Youth Choirs. Beloved by audiences throughout Maine, the magic ensues as Clara, the Sugar Plum Fairy, and the Nutcracker grace the stage of the Collins Center for the Arts. The Bangor Symphony Orchestra, Bangor Area Youth Choirs, and Music Director and GRAMMY Award–winning conductor Lucas Richman bring Tchaikovsky’s score to life.
This concert is currently available as an add-on to a 2026–2027 season subscription package. Single tickets for this concert will go on sale August 6, 2026.
Masterworks 3 – Noble Splendor
1/31/27
Take a journey with us as we travel through Austria, America, Poland, and Germany to experience lyricism and connection through the noble splendor of orchestral giants. The overture to Mozart’s short opera Der Schauspieldirektor (The Impresario) and Wieniawski’s Violin Concerto No. 2 engage the listener with beautiful, singing melodies contrasted with dramatic flair and comedic wit. Schubert, known for composing over 600 lieder, brings that same vocal quality to his “Great” Symphony.
Program
Overture to Der Schauspieldirektor | W.A. Mozart
TBD (World Premiere) | Lucas Richman
Violin Concerto No. 2 in D minor, Op. 22 | Henri Wieniawski
Julian Rhee, violin
Symphony No. 9 in C major, “The Great” | Franz Schubert
Masterworks 4 – Orchestra Unleashed
3/14/27
Join us for the orchestral showcase of the season! Bartók’s most popular orchestral work, the Concerto for Orchestra, shines a light on our own amazingly talented musicians. Shostakovich’s Festive Overture is a virtuosic showcase, and selections from Gayane by Khachaturian feature members of the BSYO performing side by side with the BSO in one of the most exciting and popular works in the repertoire.
In a joint consortium with other orchestras, led by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra through the Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation Orchestral Commissions Program, Moni (Jasmine) Guo will be in residence in Bangor for the weekend. Her new work will receive its Maine premiere at this performance.
Program
Festive Overture | Dmitri Shostakovich
the sound of where I came from ?? | Moni (Jasmine) Guo
Gayane: Three Pieces | Aram Khachaturian
Side by side with members of the Bangor Symphony Youth Orchestras
Concerto for Orchestra | Béla Bartók
Masterworks 5 – Resurrection Symphony
4/25/27
Our season finale will not disappoint! Join us as we welcome a large orchestra, plus the University Singers and Oratorio Society, for Mahler’s “Resurrection” Symphony.
Gustav Mahler himself wrote these words about his Symphony No. 2. During his tenure as music director of the New York Philharmonic (1909–1911), Leonard Bernstein almost single-handedly led the revival of Mahler’s music. Bernstein’s stirring Olympic Hymn pays tribute to the values embodied in the Olympics: “Give an example that applies to all: Fight as friends, not as foes.”
Program
Olympic Hymn | John Williams
Symphony No. 2, “Resurrection” | Gustav Mahler
Special Film Event – Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back in Concert
5/22/27 & 5/23/27
The feature film will be projected onto a large screen above the orchestra at the Collins Center while you experience John Williams’ score live.
The battle for the galaxy intensifies in this thrilling fifth episode of the saga. As Imperial forces launch an all-out attack on the Rebel Alliance, Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) flee to Cloud City, where they are captured by Darth Vader. Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) journeys to the mysterious, marshy planet of Dagobah, where Jedi Master Yoda teaches him the ways of the Force. Little does Luke know that all his training will be called upon so soon. A stunning revelation—and a life-or-death duel with Darth Vader—await.
This concert is currently available as part of a 2026–2027 season subscription package. Single tickets will go on sale August 6, 2026.
