The Shanghai Quartet

The Shanghai Quartet is one of the world’s foremost chamber ensembles, renowned for its precision, passion, and ability to bridge Eastern and Western musical traditions. Formed in 1983 at the Shanghai Conservatory, the Quartet is now in residence at the Tianjin Juilliard School and continues to perform internationally.

This program reflects their musical range and cultural fluency, featuring Haydn’s Quartet Op. 74, No. 3 “The Rider“; Tan Dun’s evocative Feng Ya Song, Gershwin’s lyrical Lullaby for String Quartet, and Dvorák’s “American” Quartet, Op. 96—a vibrant mix of classical elegance, cross-cultural expression, and spirited Americana.

Be sure to visit the Hudson to explore Art and Ritual in Sacred and Everyday Objects: Southeast Asian Art from the Allen Family Collection in the Museum’s Merritt Gallery.
